Website design, UX and User Journey
Creating a clear user journey for a growing health and wellbeing service
The Body Lab is a health and wellbeing clinic offering a range of testing, diagnostic and treatment services. I was approached to design and build a new website that would clearly communicate the services available, help users understand which options might be relevant to them and ultimately guide them towards making contact with the clinic.
The process
Understanding the end-to-end user journey
The project began with establishing the different routes users might take to reach the clinic and what they would need at each stage.
Rather than considering the website in isolation, I mapped the wider journey from a user’s initial concern through to accessing a service. A user might first discover The Body Lab through Google or social media, visit the website to understand their symptoms and available options, complete an online health quiz, receive their results, have an initial telephone consultation and ultimately book an appointment at the clinic.
This helped establish the role the website needed to play within that journey and informed the structure, hierarchy and content of the site.

Making a complex service offering easier to navigate
During the scoping and wireframing stage, the client’s service offering expanded significantly. This increased both the amount of information the website needed to accommodate and the number of individual pages required.
Simply adding everything into the original structure would have resulted in a large and increasingly complicated navigation, making it harder for users to identify the information most relevant to them.
I revisited the information architecture and worked with the client to establish which information was essential to the main user journey and which was valuable supporting content.
From this, I redesigned the navigation and page hierarchy and introduced a dedicated Knowledge Hub. More detailed and educational information could sit within the hub without overwhelming the main service areas, while still being readily available to users who wanted to explore a subject in more depth.
This allowed the website to accommodate the expanded business requirements while keeping the core journey clear and focused.
Structuring content around the user
Content structure was an important part of the project. With a large amount of health-related information and multiple services to explain, pages needed to be easy to scan and understand rather than presenting users with long blocks of information.
I structured content using clear headings, hierarchy and page sections, considering what users were likely to need first and how supporting information could be introduced without distracting from the primary purpose of each page.
Navigation, calls to action and links between relevant content were considered as part of the wider journey, helping users move naturally between learning about a subject, understanding the services available and taking the next step.

From structure to finished website
Once the information architecture and user journeys had been established, I developed the visual design and built the website in WordPress.
Throughout the project I considered accessibility and usability across different devices, including typography, colour contrast, content hierarchy, navigation, responsive behaviour and appropriate HTML structure.
The website was tested and refined throughout development, with feedback and changing requirements incorporated as the project
The result
The finished website brings together a broad and evolving range of health and wellbeing services within a clear structure that can continue to grow with the business.
By separating the core service journey from more detailed supporting information, the site allows users to explore relevant content without losing sight of the next step. The resulting structure balances the client’s need to communicate a complex range of services with the user’s need for information that is clear, accessible and easy to navigate.
