Creating an accessible and inclusive identity and website for a mental health research study
I worked with the University of Exeter to create the name, visual identity and website for a mental health research study. With the study aimed at people of varying ages, genders, cultures and abilities, it was important that the identity and website felt welcoming and inclusive, while communicating potentially sensitive information in a clear and accessible way.
Leading a small team, I worked alongside marketers, copywriters and university stakeholders to develop the project name, language and visual direction. Proposed names were shared with a lived-experience panel for feedback, and the website was also reviewed by the panel before launch. Their feedback highlighted that some of the initial imagery didn’t feel representative enough, so I redesigned a number of the illustrations to better reflect the diversity of the study’s audience.
Accessibility was considered throughout the design, including legible typography, strong colour contrast, clear content hierarchy, straightforward navigation and responsive layouts. The finished website was reviewed by the lived-experience panel and as part of the NHS research ethics process, with positive feedback on the clarity, transparency and usefulness of the information. It is now being used to give the study a clear identity and provide accessible, engaging information to prospective participants throughout recruitment.
